Wastewise Boosts Recycling Operations with the UK's First CASE 651G Wheel Loader Supplied by Warwick Ward
Leading resource management company Wastewise, now part of FCC Environment, has strengthened its fleet at its organic waste processing facility with the addition of the UK’s first CASE 651G wheel loader, proudly supplied by Barnsley CASE dealer, Warwick Ward.

The new 651G complements an existing fleet of CASE loaders on-site, which already includes a 1021G XR and two 721G XR models. The 651G steps into the role previously held by a third 721G XR, offering comparable productivity but with a more compact footprint, making it the ideal choice for the fast-paced, space-conscious operations at the plant.

Purposefully engineered to bridge the gap between CASE’s 621G and 721G models, the 651G shares the same robust 128kW (172hp) engine as the 621G, but with enhanced structural reinforcements, heavy-duty axles, and a choice of differential setups. Wastewise opted for limited slip differentials across both axles to ensure optimum traction on the site's notoriously slick concrete surfaces.

Designed with efficiency in mind, the 651G offers a hinge pin height 100mm greater than the 621G, while the XR (Extended Reach) configuration provides longer loader arms for better clearance when loading bulk trailers. A newly designed curved bucket improves material retention, further enhancing operational productivity. Other high-spec features tailored for waste handling include reversible cooling fans, advanced air filtration systems, reversing cameras, radar obstacle detection, and – on the larger 1021G – a radar-assisted dynamic braking system to bolster site safety.

Handling green waste and food waste from Cheshire East, Greater Manchester, Derby City, Staffordshire Moorlands and Wigan, the Crewe facility plays a vital role in recycling around 250,000 tonnes of organic material annually. Wastewise also operates from additional sites in Willerby (East Riding of Yorkshire) and Esholt (near Bradford), converting waste into premium soil improvers, topsoils, and growing media using advanced In-Vessel and Open Windrow composting technologies.

The CASE fleet, along with a raised-cab wheeled materials handler, keeps material moving through the recycling process and onto outgoing transport as PAS100-certified soil improver products. All machinery is provided through Warwick Ward’s comprehensive five-year fully supported lease agreements – the second consecutive partnership of its kind between Wastewise and Warwick Ward.

“Our partnership with Warwick Ward now spans a decade, which speaks volumes about the reliability of both the machines and the service we receive,” said Steve Wardell, General Manager at Wastewise.

Each machine is expected to deliver up to 2,400 operating hours annually, with Warwick Ward ensuring peak performance through CASE Site Control and Site Watch telematics. This remote monitoring capability means faster diagnostics, reduced downtime, and first-time-fix efficiency.

"With remote telemetry, our engineers can pre-diagnose issues and arrive on-site fully prepared, minimising disruption and keeping operations flowing,” added Daniel Green, Site Supervisor.

Routine maintenance is scheduled outside of core operating hours, often on Saturdays, to maximise uptime. Fire suppression systems have been installed on all machines for enhanced safety, and operator wellbeing is supported with roof-mounted BMair cab filtration units. Auto-lube systems and additional LED lighting along the cab roofs deliver further operational enhancements, particularly within the enclosed composting tunnels. Oversized buckets have been selected to optimise payloads for lightweight organic material.

Wastewise has grown into a leading resource management service provider, with three sites across the North of England. The company, along with J&B Recycling, Severn Waste Services and Merica Waste Management, was purchased by national waste and recycling giant FCC Environment in June 2024.
