Warwick Ward Golf Day 2018

17th October 2018

Warwick Ward Golf Day 2018
After a successful sun kissed first stint at a Warwick Ward golf day down in Redditch in 2015, it was decided that another Warwick Ward Memorial Trophy event would take place in 2018 at Doncaster Golf Club on 20th September. Unfortunately though this year we were not as lucky with the weather, as all involved had to play in conditions that can only be described as monsoon like! All golfers seemed wary on arrival of the previous night’s weather forecast, as many were double checking their water proofs had been packed. However it was great to see so many customers, suppliers and friends of the company come and battle away for the prestigious trophy despite the forecasted conditions.

Many hours of hard work had gone into setting up the event, including the transportation of machinery to the golf club. Furthermore, numerous Warwick Ward employees arrived early, doing a great job in setting up hospitality around the club house and on the course. However, as the greens slowly began to flood about an hour after starting and the on course footpaths were better represented as canals, the executive decision was made to cut the competition from a normal 18-hole competition to a shortened 9-hole event, to avoid the need to call for rescue boats! This decision appeared to go down well with numerous players on the course; in particular Joint MD Matt Ward who later admitted the decision not to wear waterproof trousers appeared to be a fatal error on his behalf.

The course was in great condition and some tremendous golf still managed to be played, in particular from those that had spent months prepping their swing for the big event. As the round quickly got colder and wetter, morale was kept high by Gary the Water Boy and Co. making sure refreshments were always on hand to those braving the weather.

Conditions became slippery towards the final few holes, emphasised when Jake Causier struggled to hold onto his 8-Iron on approach to the 9th green, as it flew a good 30 yards down the fairway, a sign that cutting the competition short was probably for the best.

With it being a challenge in itself to mark and read the soaked scorecards after play, a champion was eventually identified and a big congratulations goes to the individual winner Ken Stevens (Pro Aktive) who managed to card a very respectable front 9 score, given the conditions. The team event was won by the bookies’ favourites for the day, with the team consisting of Harvey Ward, John James, Chris Sellars and John Longbottom managing to card a very good score of 42 points (6-Under par).

A big thank you must go to 60+ people that turned up and took part in the event and also to Doncaster Golf Club for staging the event and providing some excellent and much needed catering afterwards. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves and hopefully on our next golf day we will be more fortunate with the weather!
